Our Composting Process

Like any process, our composting happens one step at a time. The following describes how we produce Topdressing Compost, Medium Compost and Compost Overs, as well as the compost that goes into the Bainbridge Bounty, 3-Way Soil, Raingarden Mix and Lawn Mix. TILZ Topdressing Compost is certified for use in organic gardening.

Step 1: Yard Waste

We start with fresh local yard and plant waste that is dropped off at our facility by local residents and landscapers.

Step 2: Grind

Next, the yard waste is ground up by feeding it into a large machine that shreds everything up into smaller pieces.

Step 3: The Decomposition Process

After grinding, the material decomposes naturally with help from microorganisms and fungi. The compost heats up naturally, getting hot enough to kill any weed seeds.

The Composting Process

With the help of wireless probes, we monitor the composting process for moisture and temperature. The compost cures and then stabilizes over a 60-90 day period.

Step 4: The Finished Product

Finished compost is run through a 3/8″ screener, producing the TILZ Topdressing Compost. After this, the compost is mixed with other products to make the Bainbridge Bounty, 3-Way Soil, Lawn Mix and Raingarden Mix.

Time for the Big Machines

The compost and other products are moved around and mixed with machines such as this front end loader.
